People Walked Right Past Their Own Voice Today

I stood outside the voting polls today and watched people walk right past petition workers like they didn’t even exist. Eyes forward. No questions. No interest. No understanding of what was sitting right in front of them. That clipboard may determine what laws, taxes, policies, or rights even make it to the ballot. That’s the crazy part. People will spend hours arguing online about politics, racism, schools, crime, housing, and corruption… but won’t stop for 20 seconds to hear what issue citizens are trying to put in front of voters. And the people in power know this. That’s why petition drives matter so much. Because once an issue reaches the ballot, regular people get a direct voice. Politicians lose some control over what gets discussed and decided. But too many people have become spectators instead of participants. We scroll. We complain. We repost. Then we keep walking. Meanwhile the organized groups, corporations, lobbyists, and political machines never stop participating. Never. A lot of people don’t even realize that some of the biggest laws and public issues in this country started with ordinary citizens standing outside stores, events, and voting locations asking one simple question: “Will you sign?” And millions walk right past them without understanding what they’re walking past.
